Let me address something upfront about methylene blue for cognitive performance. Yes, I wear a hat covered in red LEDs. No, it is not for hair loss.
I have been running this protocol for about a year and it remains one of the most underrated cognitive tools in my stack. Here is exactly what I do, why I do it, and what a father of five managing a high volume sales career actually notices from it.
What Is Methylene Blue?
Methylene Blue is a synthetic compound with over 100 years of medical history. It was originally used as a treatment for malaria and methemoglobinemia. In recent years the biohacking community has adopted low dose methylene blue as a cognitive enhancer because of its effect on mitochondrial function.
At low doses, specifically in the 10 to 30mg range, methylene blue acts as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In plain language it helps your cells produce energy more efficiently. Your brain is one of the most energy hungry organs in your body. Give it better fuel and it performs better.
The research on methylene blue for cognitive function is genuinely interesting. Studies have shown it may improve memory consolidation, increase ATP production in neurons, and act as a mild MAO inhibitor at higher doses. At the low dose I use it the primary benefit appears to be cleaner, more efficient cellular energy production.
What I Actually Take
I use Earth Elixir Methylene Blue+ which is a 3 in 1 capsule combining:
- Methylene Blue 20mg (Pharma Grade)
- Nicotinamide Riboside 300mg
- Alpha-Lipoic Acid 200mg
This combination is deliberate. Nicotinamide Riboside is a NAD+ precursor that supports mitochondrial health and cellular energy metabolism. Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a powerful antioxidant that protects mitochondria from oxidative stress. Together these three compounds hit cellular energy production from multiple angles simultaneously.
I do not take this every day. I cycle it three times per week, typically on days when I know I have demanding cognitive work ahead. A complex project at work, a long night at Disney World with five kids, a week where the mental bandwidth requirements are unusually high.
The Red Light Therapy Protocol
About an hour after taking the Earth Elixir capsule I put on a red light therapy cap. Mine is the Viconor infrared cap which uses 660nm red light and 850nm NIR light across 176 LEDs. I run it for 20 to 30 minutes while going about my morning.
The reason for the hour gap is intentional. Methylene blue is a photosensitizer, meaning it interacts with light. Taking it and then immediately exposing yourself to intense light sources can cause unwanted reactions. Waiting an hour allows the compound to distribute through your system before the light exposure begins.
The 850nm NIR wavelength is the one that matters most for cognitive benefits. Near infrared light penetrates the skull and stimulates cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The same pathway methylene blue targets. This is why the combination is so effective — you are hitting mitochondrial energy production through two different mechanisms at the same time.
What I Actually Notice About Methylene Blue for Cognitive Performance
I want to be honest about this because methylene blue has a lot of hype around it and I am not going to add to the noise.
What I notice is not a dramatic surge of energy or sudden superhuman focus. What I notice is a quality of mental clarity that makes difficult work feel more manageable. The kind of projects that would normally require significant mental effort to start feel easier to engage with. Sustained attention under pressure holds up better.
The Disney World example is real. Managing five children through a full day at a theme park requires a type of sustained patience and presence that is genuinely taxing. On days when I have run this protocol beforehand I show up better. More present, less reactive, more able to enjoy the chaos rather than just survive it.
That is the honest result. Not a miracle. A meaningful edge on the days I need it most.
The Warnings You Need to Read
Methylene Blue is not a casual supplement. There are serious contraindications you must understand before considering it.
Do not take methylene blue if you are on SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or any serotonergic medication. The combination can cause serotonin syndrome which is a serious and potentially life threatening condition. This is not a minor caution. This is a hard stop.
Consult your physician before starting methylene blue, particularly if you take any prescription medications. I am sharing my personal experience with a product I researched carefully before starting. This is not medical advice and should not be treated as such.
At 20mg the dose in the Earth Elixir capsule is in the range generally considered low dose for cognitive use. Higher doses produce different effects and carry more risk. More is not better with this compound.
Who This Is For
This protocol is for people who have already built a solid foundation and want to go deeper. If you are not sleeping well, not managing stress, and not eating reasonably, methylene blue is not going to fix any of that.
If you have a solid baseline and you want a tool for the days when cognitive demands are highest, this stack is worth your serious research.
The Complete Morning Stack
The methylene blue and red light therapy do not operate in isolation. They are part of a broader morning protocol that includes:
- Everyday Dose mushroom coffee with 20g Legion creatine split across two cups
- Earth Elixir Methylene Blue+ taken with the stack
- Viconor Red Light Therapy Cap about an hour after (Available on Amazon)
Each piece targets a different aspect of cognitive and cellular performance. The full protocol breakdown including exact preparation method is in my original post here.
As always I only recommend products I personally use. These are part of my regular rotation and have been for close to a year.
